PARENT COUNCIL CORNER
2009/2010

Summer (such as it was) is over and fall is here, bringing mixed emotions (kids crying, parents cheering, just like on the “Staples” commercials!) We hope everyone had a great summer despite the unpredictable weather, and had a little time for family fun and relaxation.

Now that we are thinking of school again, it is time to remind parents of the volunteer opportunities available at Brechin P.S. Due to attrition from students moving on to secondary school, as well as many parents reentering the workforce, our volunteer lists from last year have almost disappeared. In order to keep our council and volunteer programs running successfully new faces need to step up to fill these voids. This year promises to be an exciting one with many changes, but one change we do not want to see is the termination of some of the existing programs.

Help is needed in the following areas: breakfast program, hot lunch program, garden maintenance, Meet the Teacher BBQ, Funfair, Dance-a-thon as well as many other fundraising and council activities. Volunteer once, or often, as suits your schedule. Remember, the ones who benefit are the children, and volunteering is a great, fun way to make connections with other parents at BPS.

As parents it is equally important to have your voice heard by staff, administration and the school board, and helpful to find out the whys and wherefores of decisions directly affecting staffing and curriculum. In order to do so, we hope you will find the time to attend the first Brechin Public School Parent Council Meeting, on Monday September 14th at 6:30pm in the library. Also, don’t forget to mark on your calendar Wednesday September 23rd, at 5pm for the annual Meet the Teacher BBQ. It’s always a good thing when you don’t have to cook dinner! Come out and meet the staff and see your child’s classroom.
